Beginning April 16, the Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks bridge on Highway 25 in Belle Plaine would be reduced to one-lane traffic for the entire summer. Traffic signal lights would be in place to regulate the one-lane traffic. Arcon Construction of Mora was the low bidder at $608,883.71 to remove the old bridge and build a new one at the existing site.
There was great concern among Scott County Board commissioners on how the county would handle its solid waste problem. The county’s only landfill, the Louisville Landfill, had been taking in almost more garbage than it could handle since the closing of the Flying Cloud Landfill in Eden Prairie. A combination of a large volume of garbage and a dry, windy spring was causing litter problems.
Most Belle Plaine stores would be closed from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17 in observance of Good Friday. They would reopen at 3 p.m. and stay open until 8 p.m.
It was announced that there were over 200 prizes donated for the Belle Plaine High School prom that spring, among them a 1974 two-door Buick Apollo  with just 30,000 miles on it.
Belle Plaine High School speech team member Sheral Kahle placed second in Poetry at the regional speech contest and would advance to the state meet April 24 at Frank B. Kellogg High School in Roseville on April 24.
The BPHS baseball team split two games that week, losing to Mankato Loyola 15-2 and beating Norwood 4-2. Jeff Bruder pitched the entire game against Norwood. He also had a RBI double.
The Tiger softball team blitzed Mankato Loyola 9-1. Jean Schultz pitched a strong game and Lori Johnson had a two-run triple. Schultz also pitched the Tigers to a 6-3 win over Norwood. Johnson had three singles and Barb Weirke tripled and singled to bring in two runs.
